I created the ikebana flower work with iris this week as it is known for the flower of Children’s Day on May 5 in Japan. We celebrate this day for the growth, happiness and prosperity of children. The day was originally called Tango no Sekku, and they used to celebrate that day only for boys. That’s why we display the helmet of samurai called Kabuto or the samurai doll in armor for that day.

We also put some iris’ leaves into the bathtub because they have a strong smell, and it’s believed that they could drive away evil spirits. Therefore, iris is requisite element for this season in Japan.

I haven’t yet found the Japanese iris in France, however, there’re lots of kinds of iris here, and it makes me pleased to compose the flower work with them.
